Looking for info on Pete Binski aka Poker Pete.?
He was my great grandfather, who disappeared sometime in the 40s, I think, He was Polish (immigrant I think) and was a poker dealer at a card room in Eureka CA. He had been very wealthy, but was broke when he disappeared. Would like any information you might have. I think he also lived in Washington state.
The only Pete Binski I have been able to find was born about 1890, said on the 1920 census that he immigrated in 1905 from Russia, but in 1930 says from Lithuania. I have not been able to find him in the 1910 census,
Searching newspaper archives for “Poker Pete” brought up several stories, but neither last names nor ages matched.
There are two newspaper stories for Pete Binski in the Eureka Humboldt Standard dated 28 Feb and 1 Mar 1963. The articles detail a search in Humboldt Bay for Pete (age 69) after his hat had been found at the Eureka Fisheries Dock. He had reportedly told the operator of the rest home he had stayed at that he planned to jump in the bay when he was ready. There are no further stories to determine if his body was found or if he showed up alive afterwards. He and his best coat were missing from his hotel room. The stories do not mention any family.
From the information I found, it appears he stayed in Washington state throughout the 1920’s.
